Our friends Florian and Barbara Gast the publishers of South Africa’s top luxury magazine Opulent Living recently spent a week’s road trip in Namibia scouting exclusive accommodation for their next magazine. We followed their adventures with envy and after reading their latest blog post, we were intrigued.  They have a sense of style and adventure similar to ours, so we have no hesitation in sharing where they stayed and what they thought of their Namibian experience.  This got our minds working and so we decided to bring you more on Namibia and why it is the perfect choice for your next African adventure.

Opulent Living’s road trip through Namibia and over its red dunes brought them face to face with its raw desert beauty.  They stayed in three accommodations, Dune Lodge in the Namib Rand Nature Reserve with its breath-taking views and fine cuisine, Little Kulala near Soussvlei for its world-famous dunes and their final stop was to Windhoek at the Heinitzburg Hotel for its amazing rooms and delicious restaurant.  All were noted as gorgeous and unforgettable locations.

So if we had our pick of where to stay in the Namib Desert, it would definitely be the Serra Cafema Camp.

The reason? We love it for its remoteness and the vast contrast it plays between water and desert.  Perched on the banks of the Kunene River one would not have to go far to see the sand dunes.  The terrain is rugged and harsh so would probably suit the more adventurous. It’s about a three hour flight out of Windhoek but so worth it!

Quad biking, walking trails and river cruises are just some of the many activities on offer. The area is also filled with game from springbok, to ostrich and Oryx to a large population of Nile crocodile.

Accommodation consists of eight Meru-style canvas chalets which are spacious and situated on elevated decks, perfect to enjoy the desert sunsets.  This is the perfect pick for honeymooners who want some alone time but want to have some fun too!

We also totally agree with Opulent Living’s choice to go with Wolwedans Dune Lodge.

Wolwedans is actually made up of different camps designed and perfected for each guest’s specific needs.  You can choose between our favourite pick, the more elaborate and luxurious Dune Lodge, the rustic and more secluded Dune Camp and Private Camp or the Boulders Camp, which is tucked away amidst large granite rocks. Whichever choice you pick, you can’t go wrong.

We also suggest that you stay here for a few days; it is definitely not a one night destination. Only then will you get a clear picture of the beauty that surrounds you. The lodge is actually settled on a dune plateau giving you magnificent views of the surrounding desert.  It is made up of a combination of wooden structures and canvas blinds, which actually makes for the feel of a tented camp.  There are nine chalets which each have their own private verandah and when you sleep with the canvas blinds open, it’s just like sleeping under the stars!

There is much to do here in the Namib Desert from hot air ballooning, to scenic drives and hiking trails where one can actually view the red dunes and wild flowers, even set up a picnic in the middle of nowhere. And speaking of picnics, this lodge is also well known for its excellent African cuisine so foodies will love it here!

Its official: We love Namibia!  For its scorching desert, red dunes, dry landscape and picturesque sunsets, nowhere else on earth has the same appeal.
