Barefoot Luxury at Mnemba Island, Zanzibar

A finalist in the 2013 Safari Awards for Best Beach Safari Property in Africa, Mnemba Island is an unpretentious paradise where one can relax and unwind in the exclusivity of your own stretch of beachfront, where simple yet luxurious “bandas” (seaside chalets) peep out onto unblemished sands from the dappled shade of the casuarina pine forest.

Our most recent honeymoon visitors to Mnemba Island, David & Anna Bird had this to say: Paradise does not even being to describe this place. I cannot rave on about how idyllic Mnemba is. Crystal clear water, beautiful white sand and stunning snorkelling, just on the beach outside our room. If you are booking couples rooms 11 and 1 are the most romantic. We stayed at 11 and loved it!

The staff is amazing, very kind, caring and highly attentive yet unobtrusive. The diving was out of this world – our dive master, Max, was excellent and I felt very comfortable diving with him. Snorkelling with the permanent pod of approx. 15 dolphins is also a true highlight! Such amazing creatures and you get so close!

Seriously out of this world the most amazing place I have EVER been to! LOVED IT and would go back over and over again! This is a serious honeymoon destination.

We love Jack’s Camp for its East African 1940’s safari style. Mandi agrees, “With Persian rugs, cotton sheets and vintage safari tents, Jack’s Camp evokes a romantic nostalgia of historic Kalahari desert expeditions from bygone eras.”

Mystic Desert Scenes at Mowani Mountain Lodge, Damaraland, Namibia

It’s easy to get lost in your own universe and the mysteries of the mountains and hills of the Damaraland. Nestled between the ancient granite boulders and paths connecting it all together are 12 thatch en-suite rooms, each accommodating a story of their own. Visitors to Mowani Mountain Lodge can take part in exhilarating searches for the elusive desert elephant whilst hiking through the magnificent desert scenery, or visit Twyfelfontein, where rare Bushmen paintings tell fascinating stories of the Namib Desert.

We love Mowani Mountain Lodge for the heavenly pool deck which is lodged between the boulders where one can soak up the sun whilst enjoying a sundowner, totally surrounded by breath-taking views. “Unique adventures at Mowani include guided nature drives in search of the elusive desert elephant and hiking through magnificent scenery.”, says Mandi

A Working Farm Hotel at Babylonstoren, Franschhoek, South Africa

Babylonstoren has been described as a place to fall in love with the world again. Mandi cannot get enough of Babylonstoren, “I may be slightly bias, but this is most certainly one of my favourite and dream Mini-Moon spots in the Western Cape. I love it!”

Safari with a difference…

Close Encounters at Sanctuary Lodges Baines’ Camp, Botswana

Set in a grove of trees, and surrounded by papyrus beds, Sanctuary Baines’ Camp is built on raised platforms high above the Boro River in a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. As this is Sanctuary’s smallest and most intimate camp there are only five luxurious suite and should you wish, your bed can be wheeled out onto the private wooden deck for a night under the stars, overlooking the shimmering waters of the river.

We love Baines’ Camp as they offer an extraordinary opportunity to experience walking in the bush with three semi-habituated elephants. Jabu, Thembi and Morula are elephants that ‘take’ guests on long walks, foraging in the area in absolute safety. They show travellers how they look for food, strip leaves from branches with their long trunks and take showers in the lagoons of the delta. Mandi approves, “What better guide to the African bush than a fully-grown African elephant?”
