There’s something stirring in the beautiful and peaceful Elgin Valley just an hour outside Cape Town and its something that’s causing style conscious and trendy Capetonians to flock there in droves to spend weekends “down on the farm”.
We like to keep in touch as much as the next guy, so true to form we decided to join this designer pilgrimage and spent a night at the new Old Mac Daddy Trailer Hotel.
Yes it’s a caravan park (shock, horror!!!) but before you start thinking mid west Hicksville (or like me depressing childhood holidays spent with the smell of chemical toilets and nose pressed to the window watching the driving rain in the UK) think again, its like nothing you have ever seen!
To those of us in the know it’s a new exciting concept from the team who created the hugely successful Grand Daddy Hotel in the heart of Cape Town. They describe the new venture as “a rural extension of the good life”- Part wholesome caravan park, part designer farm lodge, Old Mac Daddy Trailer Hotel is a new chapter in adventure, escapism and pure relaxation. It’s a collection of 10 Air stream trailers and a villa all uniquely and artistically decorated.
So with our “wellies” packed we headed off on Friday evening to connect with nature with a difference! And we weren’t disappointed. Old Mac Daddy really is quirky, but funky with a rustic twist and a lot of fun.
Unfortunately all the trailers were full so we were booked into the “Daddy’s Villa” a separate family house on stilts overlooking the vineyards. We did manage to take a peek at the individually designed trailers though and we loved the “Give Bees a Chance” suite the most, very colourful and wacky! (Be sure to check out their web site and you will see what we mean)
Set high against the hillside in woodland, with fantastic views across the valley Old Mac Daddy is certainly in a stunning location and with lots of walking trails and mountain bikes there is plenty to do for the active minded, plus lots of activities for kids. Somehow though we connected more with the slow pace of the valley and spent our time tasting the great wines of the area and lazing in the sun over lunch at the nearby South Hill restaurant and Highlands Road Deli.
So if you are visiting Cape Town and want a stay with a difference then get with the programme and pop into to see “the daddy”
