The next stop on our large family reunion’s group itinerary was a day trip along the gorgeous and scenic Cape Peninsula. In our view, no trip to Cape Town is complete without a drive out to Cape Point and back, there is just so much to see and do along the way.

From penguins, to the famous Cape Point lighthouse, Simonstown village, Chapman’s Peak Drive and the beautiful beaches of Cape Town, the family got to experience what the Cape is well known for: its famous sea views and stunning natural beauty!

The day began with the family departing along the Atlantic Seaboard and past the trendy coastal suburbs of Bantry Bay, Clifton and Camps Bay.  The weather was perfect and the entire group made sure to stop for a photo op or two at Table Mountain’s towering Twelve Apostles.  They continued on past Bakoven and Llandudno, with the sea on the horizon marked by shipwrecks, to the quaint fishing village of Hout Bay.  Here they stopped briefly to board a boat to view the Cape fur seal colony on Duiker Island.

Back on land their journey continued on as the group drove along Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the world’s most spectacular passes, past the Cape’s longest beach near Noordhoek and through the hamlets of Kommetjie and Scarborough. Here the family got to view the rocky coastline and unique fynbos at its finest and was also where they entered the Cape of Good Hope National Park.

The park is beautiful, showcasing some of the natural wonder and views of the Cape.  Baboons even decided to pop in and make an appearance which was a real treat! Though cute and furry, these creatures are not friendly and will rob you of your food at any chance they get, so with this in mind, the family moved on, and quickly! Next they took a ride on the funicular up to the famous Cape Point lighthouse to capture the magical vistas of False Bay and stop at the south western most point of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope.

Luxury picnic baskets had been arranged for the group to nibble on for lunch and this they enjoyed as they strolled around the National Park and where they also spotted an occasional local dassie or ostrich.  Dassies are unique to South Africa and are a type of rock rabbit that live in the rocks of Table Mountain and the surrounding basin.

After a wonderful trek around the park, the family then made their way to the next stop, which was a real highlight – Boulders Beach, for a close up with a colony of African Penguins, who have made the well known spot their home.  But before they knew it, it was time to make their way back to the city and off they headed through the old naval village of Simonstown, where they took in the magnificent views of the harbor of Kalk Bay and the seaside havens of St. James and Muizenberg.

No visit to Cape Town is complete without experiencing afternoon high tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel. And on arriving back in Cape Town the family did just that. Described as one of the best high tea experiences in the world, the family were impressed with the great spread on offer from sweet confections to savoury delights which were perfectly complemented with a superb selection of premium teas. Here they sat and enjoyed the perfect teatime treat which ended off a day no one would easily forget!
